101 E 56th

I love it when it works out for A / B houses to have a separate street presence. 1,000 square feet is still a super small footprint to squeeze in everything you need plus two bedrooms, but with the right floorpan and some thoughtful details like this one has it’s possible.

Here’s a super interesting project designed in the late 90’s by Houston based architect Burdette Keeland (and completed two years before his death). Dubbed the “train wreck” house as it resembles three separate train cars haphazardly connected it’s essentially two separate homes connected by a shared public space. While it’s a tad bit “contemporary” for my taste, it’s still a really solid project considering it’s over 20 year old. The indoor outdoor connection and siting along the Blanco River is particularly on point. This one would be great for a multi-generational family situation.

I love houses like this that are total sleepers from the street but 100% nail it on the inside. The only thing I’d change on this one is a better indoor / outdoor connection to the back yard. Great location on this one too, next to one of my favorite east Austin greenbelts.
