I’m absolutely in love with this 1960 mid century modern home just off of Balcones. It’s got everything a quintessential mid-century home should have, post and beam construction, cork, terrazzo, and oodles of clerestory windows. The indoor pool is a bit quirky but I’m not mad at it at all.

4509 Balcones : David Graeber

This one is a special one. It was designed by David Graeber (of LBJ library fame amongst others) as his personal home. He lovingly called it the Japanese House for obvious reasons. The Japanese aesthetic played a huge roll in American modernism in the post war years, and it’s great to see such a clean example of it here in Austin.

We’ve featured this one before, and it’s been on the modern homes tour, so it may look familiar. It’s an upside down house with all the public space (living room, kitchen) upstairs to maximize views. I’ve been in a few houses like that, and though they are a bit different I always appreciate the difference. The only downsides on this one are the busy road, and it really needs a pool.

Don’t get me wrong this is a great house, especially the fireplace and built in cabinetry, but ultimately it’s the location that makes it great. I love this little pocket just off of Balcones road for it’s peaceful vibes. There are even some potential views to be had with an addition on this house. At almost 1/2 an acre there is definitely space for it here.
