Visual Acoustics

Utah Heritage Foundation will kick off our Fourth Annual Utah Preservation Conference with the Utah premiere of Eric Bricker’s documentary Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman. The film, along with an introduction and question and answer period with Mr. Bricker, the film’s director, will screen at the Salt Lake City Main LibraryAuditorium on April 29 at 7 PM. Previous to the screening, at 6:30 PM, we will announce and display the winning photographs from our “For the Love of MOD” Mid-Century Modern Photography Contest. Opening Night festivities are free and open to the public. Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, Visual Acoustics celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream.

Case Study Modern Logo

A friend of mine and I are starting up a little business building modern architectural components and furniture. The whole idea sprung from a post I did on GRM over a year ago about a door that my buddy built. http://grassrootsmodern.com/2008/11/17/modern-exterior-doors/
There was so much interest in people buying the door that we thought we would throw out another concept. http://grassrootsmodern.com/2009/08/17/trying-on-a-new-door/
Again, we had tons of interest, so we decided to make it formal. We got a company together and came up with the name of Case Study Modern. It’s a bit of a kick back to the mid century modernists that were originally pushing the envelope of design in the 50’s (see here) While we don’t plan on only doing MCM stuff, we like the homage to the originators of modern design. So far the focus has been on affordable modern doors mainly because it is a completely untapped market with lots of demand. With that in mind we have all sorts of future ideas from furniture to mail boxes. We shipped out our first couple doors earlier this year. This is a shot I took of one of them….

With the little bit of revenue we got we are getting some decent branding in place. We had a graphic designer mock up a couple black and white logo concepts for us.

EAMES LOUNGE CHAIR

Easily one of my favorite pieces of furniture of all time, the Eames Lounge Chair was originally released in 1956 after years of development by Herman Miller. Designed by Charles and Ray Eames the chair was the first designed for the high end market. It used many of the design characteristics that were first seen in their LCW chair such as the bent plywood shell and rubber mounts that allow the separate components to flex.  To me it embodies classic mid century design.
